Cameron Alexander

Cameron Alexander is a Black American folk artist, born in the summer of 1995 and raised in Goose Creek, South Carolina.

Growing up, Alexander's creativity was nurtured by their family and the occasional grade school teacher. Though fascinated by technology and its evolution, he left The College of Charleston's computer science program after his initial semester to pursue his creative curiosities in a non-traditional manner.

Alexander sought employment in subjects which garnered his interest and furthered his learning objectives, spending time: as a screen printer, hosting paint classes, as a gallery assistant, as an art framer, and as an art packer and handler.

Through these endeavors, Alexander found mediums to better serve his vision. Screen printing pushed him find natural printing processes such as block printing which lead to an artist residency and solo exhibition at the Gibbes Museum of Art. Teaching paint classes taught him to paint efficiently and how to manage a studio. Art framing expanded his knowledge on how to scale artwork with the collector in mind. While being an art handler allowed him access to Museums and top artist studios across New York City to see how they are structure and the role of the artist in each space. By pursuing those skills necessary to establish a career as an independent artist, he was able to maintain stability as he migrated from South Carolina to New York City.

Today, Cameron Alexander leans on illustration, printmaking, photography and sculpture to convey stories of Black American life, history and mythologies, whilst also envisioning a future in which his community can live freely in inherited abundance.
